McGregor is situated some 245m above sea level, in a bowl surrounded by rolling hills and lofty mountains. Tributaries of the Breede River, flowing from the Riviersondereind Mountains, pass near the village. In the summer these are fairly dry, but in winter they flow freely. With the Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve not far away, and the Krans Nature Reserve in the village, McGregor has a great deal for the nature-lover.
The Kleinberg (small mountain), a part of the KingsRiver Estate, is the highest hilltop in the area. It is an easy 2 hours walking trail where you will discover a lot of interesting succulents and, on top, you will find the McGregor crest laid in stone. A popular McGregor folk tale rumors that the local witches dance here naked during full moon. At other times, there is a 360 degree view of the Kingsriver valley and the village of McGregor and, in the distance, you will see the Langeberg mountains to the North and the Riviersonderend mountains to the South, with Greyton just at the other side.
The Kingsriver Kloof Trail, over land jointly owned by the Estate but not accessible to the general public, provides a wonderful experience for our guests. This gentle hike starts at the guest house, curls up the beautiful, water-eroded ravine, past rock pools, waterfalls and large caves, and opens out to the massive dam, one of the largest in the area. It is ideal for nature watching or a picnic.
The trail's ancient Bushman caves are easily accessible, and around the cave and the kloof may be found clay potsherds, early stone age hand axes and lithic flakes. Klipspringer, cape clawless otter, steenbok, baboons, fish eagles and black eagles may be seen, and leopards and rooikat (aka caracal or desert lynx) are there for the lucky few.
Other Trails. There are many other hikes in the McGregor area, all within a short drive of the KingsRiver Estate. For a full list and descriptions, please see the hiking page on the McGregor village website.
