History

The history of Kingsriver Estate goes back some 150 years. In that time on this very spot was a small simple farmers house, the foremost part of the current Masterhouse, but without its current characteristic Cape Dutch front.

In the Fifties the farm was sold to the son of the famous English cigarette factory Gunston.

Young Gunston became famous in the area not because of his farmers qualities, they were not that obvious, but because of the glamorous parties he organized.

For that purpose only, he enlarged the Masterhouse into the typical H-form and gave it its characteristic Cape Dutch top front.

Later on the farm was sold to a Mr. Longland, a cattler who decided to stall his cattle in the Masterhouse.

In 1984 the farm was sold to Johan Nel and Pieter Welgemoed, who was Minister of Agriculture at the time.

They sold the farm in 2001 to Mrs Felicia von der Schulenburg and her husband
